FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 31, 2006
DAYTON, OH — Community Blood Center (CBC) urges everyone who is eligible to donate blood to be a “one arm band-it” and donate a “pint of life” at one of its pre or post Labor Day special events.
Everyone who registers to donate on one of these special days will receive a limited edition “Don’t Gamble with the Blood Supply” t-shirt and is eligible to win a one night stay for two at the Argosy Casino!
Events will be held in Dayton, Hamilton, Middletown, Richmond, Springfield and West Chester and APPOINTMENTS ARE REQUIRED!
Area donors “hold all the cards” to a safe and adequate blood supply around the long Labor Day holiday weekend. Holiday weekends are typically difficult on the blood supply due to high usage and low collections. All Community Blood Center (CBC) locations are closed on Labor Day Monday. Currently, the area blood supply is 800+ pints low with the greatest need for types O and A. The party is scheduled in the weeks before and after the three-day Labor Day weekend during which few blood drives are scheduled and high blood usage could occur. Over this past Memorial Day weekend, 712 pints were used and over the 4th of July weekend, 715 pints were used. In 2005, 793 pints of blood were transfused over the long Labor Day weekend.
CBC must collect 335 pints of blood a day to meet the needs of area patients in the 25 hospitals served by CBC.
Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good physical health. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically. Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email email@example.com or call 1-800-388-GIVE. Required to donate blood: A photo ID with full name and social security number.
